Ardnamurchan - The Volcanic Edge of Scotland
Corrachadh Mòr from Ardnamurchan Lighthouse. September 2024
The Ardnamurchan Peninsula is on the West Coast of Scotland just North of the Isle of Mull. It's tip, Corrachadh Mòr, is the most Westerly point on the British Mainland.
It's not the easiest of places to get to but it rewards the determined traveller with stunning scenery, beautiful beaches, fascinating geology, stunning skies and a calm that you will find in very few places.
The western end of the peninsula is formed by at least three overlapping volcanic eruptions that happened around 60 million years ago.
Most of the lava has eroded away, leaving the crystallised rock from inside the magma chamber which has formed a series of overlapping rings around the volcanic centres.

The best known landmarks on the peninsula are the lighthouse at the Point of Ardnamurchan and the beautiful sandy beach at Sanna Bay. From the lighthouse it is possible to see the islands of Mull, Coll, South Uist (in the Outer Hebrides), Canna, Muck, Eigg, Rum and Skye.
